LEARNING THE LANGUAGE OF OIL PAINTING
"Learning the language of oilpainting is very important and an oil painter must see the world differently than most people. One must change their way of thinking......"
Before I begin painting, I tell myself the things I want to paint are real, but all I have is paint. I then put myself inside the “idea of being a
landscape.” What are the elements I need to apply step by step to turn myself into a landscape.
First and foremost, I think about the “depth” in the painting because I like to create an illusion of space. I want to give my viewers the feeling that they can “walk into a painting.”
When I choose a subject for my paintings, I’m thinking of what kind of story or mood I want to create and then adjust the flow of the painting to fit my own personality. Sometimes a burning idea just pops into my head, or I’ll remember something from a dream, a photograph or remember driving by and notice an attractive branch from a tree and have the urge to paint it’s flow.....
I hope to convey a sense of personal perspective that will strike an emotional chord with the viewer.
After the idea is established in the painting, I start painting while putting myself in a state of mind and then I start to fantasize and imagine myself inside the painting……or pretend I am a sculpturor molding out the composition.
“When I’m painting, I feel like an open vessel…..very focused but thinking about so many things. Sometimes hours go by and I don’t even realize it. My thoughts are free and I’m in a different state of mind. When you’re painting, a lot of things come in to you and then I feel at peace and that is when my artistic energy and creation start to flow.”
